Shortsightedness

Shortsightedness. Artwork of section through an eyeball affected by shortsightedness, or myopia. This is a condition in which distant objects appear blurred. Light from the bird being observed is brought into focus before it reaches the retina (yellow lining), the light-sensitive membrane at the back of the eye. Focusing is performed by the cornea (blue bulge, far right of eyeball) and the lens (blue oval, left of cornea). Myopia is usually caused by the eyeball becoming elongated, rather than by a defect of the cornea or lens. It can be treated by contact lenses, spectacles or by surgery to adjust the shape of the cornea

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Shortsightedness" offers a detailed artwork showcasing the effects of myopia, commonly known as shortsightedness. The image provides a cross-section view of an eyeball affected by this condition, where distant objects appear blurred to the individual. By examining this illustration, we can better understand how light from an observed bird is brought into focus before reaching the retina, which is the light-sensitive membrane at the back of our eyes. The cornea and lens play crucial roles in focusing light onto the retina; however, myopia occurs when the eyeball becomes elongated rather than due to defects in these components. Fortunately, various treatments are available for myopia including contact lenses, spectacles or surgery that adjusts the shape of the cornea. This remarkable artwork combines elements of biology and medicine to shed light on this visual disorder. It serves as a valuable resource for ophthalmologists and optometrists alike who study ocular conditions such as myopia. Science Photo Library has skillfully captured both scientific accuracy and artistic expression within this image.
