Each node consists of a fibrous capsule (yellow) surrounding the outer cortex and inner medula. Functions include filtration of lymph (yellow blobs) by scavenging macrophage white blood cells, production and storage of both antibody-secreting B-lymphocytes involved in humoral immunity, and of T-lymphocytes involved in the cell-mediated immune response. A labyrinth of cells and cell processes in the inner medullary sinuses slow the flow of fluid through the node, encouraging the actions of lymphatic cells involved in immune response processes
