Activated platelets, SEM
Activated platelets. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of activated platelets, or thrombocytes, starting to adhere to exposed sub-endothelium on the inner surface of a vein. Platelets are fragments of white blood cells that under normal circumstances are small and biconcave in form. However, if there is a break in the surface of a blood vessel the platelets come into contact with molecules they are not used to and become activated. They become amorphous in form, with long projections (pseudopodia) that help them adhere to the vein and each other, forming a clot over the site of the break. Magnification: x50 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of activated platelets. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we witness a pivotal moment as these tiny fragments of white blood cells respond to an injury within a vein. Under normal circumstances, platelets are small and biconcave in shape. However, when they encounter foreign molecules due to a break in the blood vessel's surface, they undergo activation. This transformation renders them amorphous and prompts the growth of long projections called pseudopodia. In this image, we can observe these activated platelets beginning to adhere not only to the exposed sub-endothelium but also to each other. Through their collective efforts, they form a clot over the site of the vascular damage. With its false-coloured presentation and magnification at x50 when printed at 10 centimetres wide, this SEM print offers us an extraordinary glimpse into one aspect of our body's remarkable response mechanisms. It serves as a reminder that even on such microscopic scales, biology is awe-inspiring and complex. Science Photo Library continues to provide invaluable resources for scientific exploration by capturing stunning visuals like this one—images that bridge the gap between artistry and scientific discovery.
