Animal cell, illustration C018 / 0734
Animal cell. Illustration showing the organelles present in an animal cell. At lower centre is the nucleus, which contains the cells genetic information in the form of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Surrounding the nucleus is endoplasmic reticulum (ER, above nucleus), a membrane bound organelle that is the site of lipid syntesis and the production of membrane-bound proteins. ER may be wither rough (RER), that is with ribosomes (black dots), or smooth (SER), without ribosomes. Also seen are mitochondria (oval), which produce the cells energy, and Golgi apparatus (bottom centre), a membrane-bound organelle that modifies and packages proteins. The round structures are lysosomes, which contain enzymes for digesting foreign particles

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of an animal cell, providing a glimpse into its complex structure and functions. At the center, we find the nucleus, housing the vital genetic information encoded in DNA. Surrounding it is the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), a membrane-bound organelle responsible for synthesizing lipids and producing proteins that are essential for cellular processes. The ER can exist in two forms: rough (RER) with ribosomes or smooth (SER) without ribosomes. The mitochondria, depicted as oval structures, play a crucial role in generating energy for the cell. Positioned at the bottom center is the Golgi apparatus, another membrane-bound organelle involved in modifying and packaging proteins before they are transported to their designated locations within or outside of the cell. Lysosomes, represented by round structures within this artistic illustration, contain enzymes that aid in breaking down foreign particles through digestion. This image beautifully captures these key components of an animal cell while emphasizing their individual contributions to cellular function. Created by Claudia Stocker from Science Photo Library's vast collection of scientific artwork, this print serves as both an educational tool and a work of art. It offers viewers a deeper understanding of biology's fundamental unit - showcasing how cells possess remarkable complexity despite being microscopic entities.
