Lanercost Priory a62_07234

LANERCOST PRIORY, LANERCOST, BURTHOLME, CARLISLE, CUMBRIA. View of the ruins of Lanercost Priory, most likely the south side of the priory, including part of St Marys Church, the former priory nave.
Exterior view of the ruins of Lanercost Priory, most likely of the south side. The right side of the image shows a three storey section of the old priory, possibly the south transept, which has a small round arch entrance on the west side in the corner, and a triangle shape above the second storey on the south facing side. To the right is the nave of the priory, which is still used as the parish church, St Marys Church. The full height of the former nave can be seen, with the tiled roof intact. In the background is the remains of a tower and in the foreground a raised path of grass can be seen, bordered by a small stone wall that follows the shape of the outer walls. The priory was founded by the Augustine order and was visited on a few occasions by Edward I, including in 1306-07 when he was taken ill and stayed for six months. Lanercost Priory was dissolved in 1537 during the reign of Henry VIII, and was given to Sir Thomas Dacre. The site is currently cared for by English Heritage

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic ruins of Lanercost Priory, located in Lanercost, Burtholme, Carlisle, Cumbria. The view showcases the south side of the priory and includes a glimpse of St Mary's Church, which was once part of the priory nave. On the right side of the image stands a three-storey section of the old priory, possibly identified as the south transept. It features a small round arch entrance on its west side corner and an intriguing triangle shape above its second storey on the south-facing side. To its right lies the intact nave of the priory, now serving as St Mary's Church for parishioners. The photograph also reveals remnants of a tower in the background while foregrounding a raised grass path bordered by a quaint stone wall that follows along with outer walls' contours. This serene setting invites visitors to immerse themselves in history and explore this former Augustine order establishment. Lanercost Priory holds historical significance as it welcomed several visits from Edward I during his reign. Notably, he stayed here for six months in 1306-07 when he fell ill. However, like many other religious institutions during Henry VIII's reign in 1537, Lanercost Priory was dissolved and granted to Sir Thomas Dacre. Today, English Heritage takes care of this cherished site—preserving its rich heritage for generations to come. E. M Booty skillfully captured this momentous scene through their lens—a testament to both their photographic prowess and Historic England's commitment to documenting our nation's architectural treasures.
