EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of South Park Farm, formerly known as Sale Farm, in Smarts Hill, Penshurst, Sevenoaks, Kent. The image showcases a range of 17th-century farm buildings facing eastwards in a U-shape formation. The central part of the U is prominently visible, with an external stack of another building on the left side and the north side structures on the right. Despite its age, these farm buildings remain functional and bustling with activity. In the background, diligent men can be seen diligently working amidst this picturesque rural setting. Their presence adds a sense of liveliness to this historic scene. It's worth noting that these structures underwent significant renovations and expansion between 1850-1851 by George Devey. His architectural touch has seamlessly blended with the original design elements to create a harmonious blend of old-world charm and modern functionality. The photographer labeled this image as "Sale Farm" although it is now recognized as South Park Farm. This discrepancy adds an intriguing layer to its historical significance. E M Booty's skillful capture transports us back in time to witness not only the beauty but also appreciate how agriculture played a vital role in shaping our past. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and nature's enduring resilience throughout centuries.
