Paternoster Square JLP01_08_062711

PATERNOSTER SQUARE, CITY OF LONDON. Looking west during the construction of the Paternoster development, showing the Old Bailey in the background and Christchurch Greyfriars on the right.
Work on the Paternoster development was carried out in a joint venture by John Laing Construction Limited, Trollope and Colls Limited, and George Wimpey and Company Limited. The scheme involved the redevelopment of a seven acre site on the north side of St Pauls Cathedral. The site had been almost entirely devastated during an incendiary raid in December 1940. The development consisted of a series of office blocks, a shopping precinct, an extensive piazza and a three-level car park

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Paternoster Square in the City of London during its construction. The image showcases the impressive Paternoster development, with the iconic Old Bailey standing tall in the background and Christchurch Greyfriars to the right. The Paternoster development was a joint venture undertaken by John Laing Construction Limited, Trollope and Colls Limited, and George Wimpey and Company Limited. This ambitious project aimed to regenerate a seven-acre site on the north side of St Paul's Cathedral that had been ravaged by an incendiary raid in December 1940. The redevelopment consisted of a series of sleek office blocks, a bustling shopping precinct, a spacious piazza, and even included a three-level car park. It symbolized hope for post-war regeneration as it breathed new life into this once-devastated area. This urban snapshot from the 1960s not only showcases remarkable architectural progress but also represents resilience and determination in rebuilding after destruction. It serves as a reminder that cities can rise from ashes stronger than ever before. Preserved within Historic England Archive, this photograph offers us an intriguing glimpse into London's past while celebrating its present-day vibrancy.
