Installing the spire JLP01_08_062427
COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. RAF aircrew on the roof of Coventry Cathedral manoeuvring the 80ft bronze spire on to a 1 yard square plate. The spire of the old cathedral can be seen in the background.
The photograph was taken during Operation Rich Man a joint project involving Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff. This involved a RAF Belvedere helicopter hoisting in to place the 80ft bronze spire on to the new cathedral. The part of the operation to lower the 1/2 ton cross that sits on top of the spire had to be postponed due to windy conditions

This print captures a historic moment in the construction of Coventry Cathedral. RAF aircrew members can be seen on the roof, carefully maneuvering an impressive 80ft bronze spire onto a 1 yard square plate. The old cathedral's spire stands tall in the background, serving as a reminder of the city's rich architectural heritage. The photograph was taken during Operation Rich Man, a collaborative effort between Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff. This ambitious project aimed to install the new cathedral's spire using an RAF Belvedere helicopter. However, due to challenging weather conditions with strong winds, the crucial step of lowering the half-ton cross that sits atop the spire had to be postponed. The image exudes both grandeur and precision as skilled individuals work together against all odds to shape this iconic structure. It is a testament to human ingenuity and determination in overcoming obstacles during large-scale construction projects. Dating back to the 1960s, this photo provides us with a glimpse into history while showcasing people at work on a building site that would soon become one of England's most renowned cathedrals. With its powerful symbolism and remarkable craftsmanship, Coventry Cathedral continues to inspire awe and reverence today.
