Mayday Hospital JLP01_10_13255

MAYDAY HOSPITAL, LONDON ROAD, WEST THORNTON, CROYDON, GREATER LONDON. A view towards the new services block and surgical block at Mayday Hospital, taken from the north-west.
Laings Southern Region was awarded the contract for the first phase of a multi-million pound redevelopment project at Mayday Hospital. The Laing Phase I contract was awarded by the South West Thames Regional Health Authority and was to be carried out over a period of three years, with work starting in 1979. The contract included a new three storey surgical block with a linked service block, which was to be connected to the main hospital complex by bridge. The Laing contract also included the provision of a new road between the site and London Road, car parks, and other ancillary buildings. The new surgical block had twelve wards providing approximately 330 beds, operating theatres, an intensive therapy unit, an adult day care unit, and other staff facilities. The services block housed a kitchen, staff dining room, goods reception and distribution centre, and further plant areas
